Downside Abbey: an Architectural History

Described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as, ‘the most splendid demonstration of the renaissance of Roman Catholicism in England’, the Neo Gothic abbey church at Downside Abbey, Somerset was built between the 1880s and the 1930s under the direction of some of the country’s most renowned ecclesiastical architects. The Lisbonian Magazine (Now available online)

The Lisbonian is the bi-annual magazine for those educated at the English College at Lisbon up to the start of the 1970s.

Under the editorship of Kevin Hartley the magazine serves to keep alumni in touch with one another whilst also reporting on events. There are also a series of articles, written by alumni or those with an association to the College, on various themes - ranging from the historical to ecclesiastical.

It is dedicated to the text of an address given at Farleigh Castle on the 28th May 2001 at a celebration of Margaret Pole's life organised by a Downside monk, Dom Gervase Murray-Bligh.
